So, you stumbled onto this website and you have no idea what it's about, right?
Well, that's what this page is for.
The Anteheroes is what my girlfriend would call a 'brain splortch.' I've wanted to be an author for a long time, but I had a bad habit of writing only a little bit, becoming dissatisfied with my work, and spending a lot of time editing my little piece before growing tired of the whole thing and giving up. I felt having a website with my material freely available for people to read and critique would give me added motivation to write without letting my perfectionism get in the way. And it's worked.
Sure, my update schedule isn't the most reliable - I promise, I'm working on it - but I'm limited in what I can edit, so the only thing to do is push forward and deal with my mistakes. Call it my own little Nanowrimo but all year long.
So these are rough drafts?
Very rough. The published material is much more clean, and you can find it at the Store link to my left.
So you write, I got it. What do you write about?
The Anteheroes. And to pre-empt your next question, The Anteheroes are a group of six (or five, depending on the way you look at it) people with supernatural abilities, and they seek to do the 'right thing' with these powers. Sooner or later, anyway. Depending on where they fall on the Anti-Hero-to-Hero continuum, it might take some longer than others. And Agent Aeolus is just a plain jackass, so he's the "iffy" member. They're not like a superhero team or anything, though. More like magical coworkers.
Yeah, I said magic. Welcome to the Anteverse. A lot like our universe - at least up to a point - but magic exists in the shadows. Mostly government-funded shadows, no less. I'd say more, but I don't want to spoil the story. Just watch out for that first step - it's a trip.
What genre is this?
I added this question just because I typically file this under 'Science Fiction' or 'Science Fantasy'. It's modern era, in pretty much the world we know, but with a few changes. The timeline of the Ante-verse notably diverges from the mainstream world in 2002, with the Hellenic Civil War, but it's always been just a bit different - Wilmington, Delaware is most certainly not part of a twin-city set-up, Williamton does not exist, and they are not a moderately large city/cities. Anteheroes specifically takes place in 2005, and its unnamed prequel takes place in 2000 and 2001.
Man, your writing sucks!
I'm sorry you feel that way. Keep in mind stuff is going to be rough compared to the books I release because these things don't get a real chance to sit and be edited when put up in episodic format. It really is hard writing like this instead of the normal way, though it's a lot of fun. Also, be sure to give the later episodes a try - as I adapt to this my style improves, or at least I like to think so.
If you've read the book and you feel that way, then I sincerely hope you will e-mail me and let me know what you think could be done to improve my writing. Hopefully with a minimum of unnecessary barb, though if it's funny, I can stand a little bit of unnecessary mean-spiritedness.
What are your inspirations?
I draw inspiration from a lot of things, but mostly cartoons. The DC Comics Animated Universe holds a strong place in my heart. Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman: Gotham Knights, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. Agent Aeolus is visually inspired by Static of Static Shock, though if you look at the art, I think you'll quite clearly see it's only a superficial visual resemblance and the personalities are not similar at all. Also in character inspiration, Helena draws on many elements of the Joker and Darkseid, two big villains from the Batman and Superman universes respectively. I also write as though I'm scripting for a cartoon, which I think has a lot to do with how awesome I'm told my action sequences are.
Anime is also an influence, though nowhere near as large with me as many of my age, it seems. I like anime, but not as much as some of my friends. I was massively into it when I was younger, and Alexis and Helena - holdovers from a story I wrote back then - have strong bishounen and bishoujo influences in their appearance.
How often do you update?
Theoretically, we update once a week, by the weekend (though hopefully before). In reality, that fluctuates a lot with my life, creativity, and interest.
How far do you plan to extend this series?
I'm making an entire universe out of this. What exactly I'm planning to do with the future of the Anteverse at any time varies, but here is the current list. Be warned, however, that the 'Proposed' list is wildly subject to change as inspiration or reality hit me.
Already Released or In Progress: |
Currently Proposed: |
| Agent Aeolus and the Anteheroes | Alexis Decker, Bathrobe Ninja |
| The Voyages of the Anteheroes | Alexis Decker, Medium-at-Large |
| The Philosopher Queen | |
| The Age of the Anteheroes |
What's with all the cursing?
No one's brought this up yet, but I figure that before we go major, it's good to address this one right now. It's there for a reason. I am against unnecessary use of curse words, violence, and sex in literature and other forms of entertainment, and you'll notice there isn't a single curse word in use on this site outside of the episodes. (In part, as I wish to look professional - I must admit to a somewhat dirty mouth when conversing.) Simply put, people aren't going to say 'darn' and 'heck' all the time. I only use cursing to heighten realism and try to avoid it when it seems out of character.
Think you can give me the lowdown on _______?
Check the profiles section! I'm trying my best to keep it updated!
